From Virtual Concept to Real Profit, New Book Roadmaps How to Adapt to a Rapidly Changing Business Environment Using Product Lifecycle Management Technologies

clip_image002Dayton, OH - December 16, 2009: The Sogeti Group, a leader in Technology Consulting Services including Engineering Services and PLM solutions, announced the release of a book on increasing profits through digital manufacturing and simulation. The book is a joint collaboration between Sogeti and Dassault Systèmes (Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions. In five chapters, this book explains how a seamlessly integrated fabric of information technology, digital manufacturing, simulation, robotics and physical production is no longer just an idea, but a reality for real profit.

For manufacturers, global competition has become increasingly fierce due to the economic crisis and issues tied to green business. However, these challenges also provide great opportunity, if not a necessity, to rethink the way that products are developed and manufactured. Innovation is imperative, not only at a technological level, but in every aspect of the product development cycle. The major barrier to improving productivity is related to efficient planning and controls. Companies should focus more on effective means to reduce manufacturing costs and to improve their activity planning.

This book covers exciting possibilities and the accompanying challenges offered by modern digital manufacturing and simulation to efficiently and effectively conduct profitable business in ways that, even a few years ago, could only have been dreamt of. In the near future, lifelike experience and extended digital manufacturing will be at the very heart of any state-of-the-art manufacturing company,” said Philippe Charlès, CEO DELMIA, Dassault Systèmes.

clip_image004Modern digital manufacturing and simulation are the main enablers for obtaining such benefits. Digital manufacturing is the capability to define and simulate exactly how a product will be built in a global collaborative environment.

Simulation is key to many business operations, and its application is still developing at a rapid pace, supported by modern mathematics, information technology and computer graphics to create a 100% lifelike experience. Evolving from 2-D representation via 3-D and so-called “digital mock-up”, we have now entered the stage of digital manufacturing. It involves an integrated suite of tools to define and simulate all manufacturing operations and resources in the context of a product and a production plant. Modern digital simulation allows engineers to validate and optimize manufacturing processes.

Present-day economic reality forces organizations to take a hard look at their strategies and practices of manufacturing. Modern digital manufacturing and simulation offer a potential order of magnitude increase in both efficiency and innovation. However, to deliver on this promise barriers must be overcome. This book addresses challenges and benefits, and lays out the vision of a state-of-the-art manufacturing environment,” comments Dominique Lafond, CEO, Sogeti High Tech.

The book was published in October, right? I pulled a copy, but haven’t dove into it yet. It will be interesting to see how High Tech Consulting grows in 2010.
